Background of the Study
Food contamination is a critical public health issue that can result from poor environmental hygiene practices, including inadequate sanitation and waste management. In Nasarawa State, located in central Nigeria, food safety concerns have emerged as a major issue due to rapid population growth and urbanization, which have outpaced the development of proper sanitation infrastructure (Ogundipe et al., 2024). Poor hygiene practices such as improper disposal of waste, lack of clean water, and the contamination of food during handling or preparation contribute to foodborne illnesses, which can have significant health consequences (Anwar et al., 2023).

Research indicates that food contamination in Nasarawa State is particularly prevalent in urban and peri-urban areas, where markets and food vendors often lack the necessary hygiene standards to prevent contamination (Abdullahi & Ibrahim, 2023). In addition, environmental pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial activities further exacerbates food safety risks (Abubakar et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the extent of food contamination caused by poor environmental hygiene in Nasarawa State and identify the associated risks to public health.

Statement of the Problem
Food contamination in Nasarawa State is increasingly linked to poor environmental hygiene practices, but there is insufficient data on the specific sources of contamination and their impact on public health. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the link between environmental hygiene and food safety issues in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of poor environmental hygiene on food contamination in Nasarawa State.
  2. To identify the primary environmental factors contributing to foodborne illnesses in the state.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving food safety through better environmental hygiene practices in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

  1. How does poor environmental hygiene contribute to food contamination in Nasarawa State?
  2. What are the main sources of foodborne contamination in the state?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to improve food safety and environmental hygiene in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor environmental hygiene practices significantly contribute to food contamination in Nasarawa State.
  2. Foodborne illnesses in Nasarawa State are directly linked to environmental pollution and waste mismanagement.
  3. Implementing improved sanitation and waste management practices will reduce the risk of food contamination in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on food safety issues in urban and peri-urban areas of Nasarawa State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data on food handling practices and difficulty in tracing the exact sources of contamination due to the complexity of environmental pollution.

Definitions of Terms

  • Food Contamination: The presence of harmful substances in food, typically resulting from improper handling, storage, or environmental factors.
  • Environmental Hygiene: Practices and measures that maintain cleanliness in the environment to prevent health risks, including proper waste disposal and sanitation.
  • Foodborne Illnesses: Diseases caused by consuming contaminated food, which can lead to symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal distress to more severe health complications.
